Leti, innovation
for industry
One of Leti’s major success stories involves Essilor International, the world leader in eyeglass lenses.
Essilor spends about 30 percent of its annual R&D budget on partnerships with academic and government laboratories. So, the company turned to Leti for our micro- and nanotechnology expertise when it wanted to develop a new generation of innovative, digital lenses.
One of hundreds of successful Leti collaborations, this bilateral partnership began in 2006. We formed a common lab in 2007, and renewed it in 2009.
Essilor has collaborated successfully with CNRS on various projects over the years. While the two of them worked mainly on material research and advanced concepts, Leti developed the technologies and building prototypes for the new lenses. Apart from a specific ink jet tool acquired for the project, the equipment and related technologies, including microelectronics photolithography techniques, were developed on Leti’s 200mm backend technology platform.
As Jean-Luc Schuppiser, Essilor’s Corporate Senior Vice President of R&D, told the magazine Usine Nouvelle early this year, “With these two labs, Essilor developed a new generation of digital lenses of which the optical and physical properties will be encapsulated in microcuvettes, independent from one another, in order to multiply infinitively the personalization of the lenses. A first commercial product, which is still confidential, is already in preparation.”

The Leti/Essilor common lab was renewed in 2009 to focus on electro-optic technology for glasses with associated electronics.
Like many Leti partners, Essilor realizes that while it must continuously invest in the latest research and development, it is much more cost effective to focus on what it does best and partner with labs that have other specializations.
